Publishers Description
One of the most amazing things about Hebrew is that, in less than a century, it has gone from an ancient language of prayer and ritual spoken by a few holy men to a modern language of sunbathing, dining, going to the movies, and countless other everyday activities, spoken by millions. Modern Hebrew is a beautiful language, but for a native English speaker it can be tough wrapping your tongue around exotic expressions like "Ha'im Ayn Oogiyot?" ("What, no cookies?"). As with any language, the quickest way to master Hebrew basics is to immerse yourself in its sounds and rhythms. The next best thing to six months in Haifa, "Hebrew For Dummies" lets you do just that

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A terrible place to start  May 28, 2008
I got this since I know the basics of Hebrew but this book doesn't use a single Hebrew letter. Everything is Latinized and that is a terrible way to learn Hebrew and it is forbidden in an actual classroom.

Do yourself a favor. If there is a synagogue in your town, call them up and see if they offer Hebrew classes. Then check with your local community college or university.

Not using the Hebrew alphabet is the worst way to learn Hebrew. You WILL say some words wrong and anyone who knows Hebrew will have to correct you so much that you soon realize that you've been ripped off by buying this book.

Conversational Only  Nov 22, 2007
Don't expect to learn anything about the written language. There are also inconsistencies in the romanized spelling of certain terms. These are easy to identify, but annoying nonetheless.

can't believe it doesn't use Hebrew script  Sep 28, 2007
When i learn a language, i want to learn to write it at the same time i learn to speak it. It makes little sense to just learn to talk and not to read or write. One re-enforces the other. This book is completely based on phonetic spelling of Hebrew. Absolutely useless.

not what expected  Sep 8, 2007
i bought this book in a bookstore, where it was wrapped up so i couldn't look inside. i wanted to learn to speak and understand hebrew, since when i was little i learned how to fluently read the hebrew, but had very little vocabulary taught besides what we studied in the torah.

i have been to israel, and i know the basic phrases, so wandering around, i know what the "sher-oo-teem" is when i see a sign in hebrew, so i dont' understand how this book is made for tourists. you wouldn't be able to recognize the male or female restrooms. they don't write out the english pronounciations of hebrew words. so going to israel equipped with just the vocabulary but not the alphabet would be the same as just knowing english.

and really, even if you don't learn to read hebrew fluently, there's still words that you would be able to recognize just by looking for them.

Good to start with  Mar 14, 2007
The book is very well organized and oriented to the everyday use of the hebrew language. There is only one thing I really missed: the hebrew writing along with the transliterated text. After a first glance at the book I felt a little bit disapointed for not finding the hebrew lines. I hope that future editions will consider this suggestion which will certainly enhance the already very good work of the author. If you want a first contact with hebrew through sound only - the acompanying CD is also very good - then I do recommend the book.
