Reviews - What do our customers think?
Be Warned  Mar 26, 2007
The heart of this software is the 1962 Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible. It is hard to find this separate from the larger set of IB Commentary. Also the introductions of the NIB commentary here. Liberal, but interesting. Be Warned that it will not load to your hard drive. It is locked by "Nextpage" to look to the CD Rom or nothing. Copying it to the hard drive and setting it up there does not get around this feature. Abingdon wants to protect their "intellectual" property, as they put it. That is ok, but it should be plainly stated in their advertisements. Of course, it is not for it would hurt sales and marketing knows that. What if all Biblical software could not be off loaded to the hard drive? It is my understanding this is true for all their software, so why someone would spend $500+ for the New Interpreter's Commentary and not to be able to load it on hard drive is beyond me.

Great!  Feb 3, 2007
I used The New Interpreter's Reference Books in Seminary and I am delighted to have this in combination with my New Revised Standard Bible.

Inclusive language and more than a bit against the grain  Jan 26, 2007
If you are a Protestant then the NRSV is a modern Bible you can use. However it contains inclusive language, something that the Catholic Vatican has rejected. However Bishops in Canada started using this in the liturgy before given permission to do so. In response the Catholic Vatican gave Canadians an exclusive temporary usage for this Bible. In short the outcome for the NRSV in the Catholic Church looks bad. The New Jerusalem Bible also suffers from the same inclusive language problem and has not been deemed fit for liturgical use either. The only modern Catholic Bibles that come to mind and are deemed fit for liturgical use are the Jerusalem Bible, the Revised Standard Version - Catholic Edition to name some. It seems that the old modern Bibles are standing the test of time. Don't let this review put you off collecting them all though.

A great modern study bible!  Jan 22, 2007
I own several study bibles and this is the best one. Other study bibles sometimes offer useless or superfluous information. "This was the third time God spoke to Abraham", "This story shows God's greatness", etcetera. The New Interpreter's Study Bible offers facts and figures based on the present state of Bible science. So don't expect a book which ascribes Genesis to Moses or defends typically orthodox opinions. Facts are sacred, uncertainties recognised. The colour maps are fine guides and the many excursuses offer detailed explanations of lots of theological and biblical issues. Finally, the combination with the NRSV translation, generally accepted as the most conscientious one, emphasizes the makers' wish to create a study bible as reliable as possible.

Excellent resource  Jan 14, 2007
Using this presently for a course in discipleship. References contained in the bottom half of each page are verse by verse which is critical for understanding scripture.
